Retinol is one of the best-known anti-aging ingredients. It helps smooth skin texture and make fine lines less visible. But you need to start gradually, otherwise skin may react with dryness and flaking. Here is how to begin.
Retinol, retinal and bakuchiol: the difference
- Retinol is a form of vitamin A. In the skin it is gradually converted into the active form, so it works more gently and suits a first introduction to retinoids.
- Retinal (retinaldehyde) is the next step in that chain: it needs fewer conversions, so it works more actively. Introduce it once your skin is used to retinol.
- Bakuchiol is a plant ingredient. It is not a retinoid, but it is often chosen as a gentler alternative for sensitive skin.
How to start
- Start with a low concentration, for example 0.1–0.3%.
- Apply in the evening 2–3 times a week. If your skin tolerates it well, gradually increase the frequency.
- Use a small amount — about a pea-sized drop for the whole face — on clean, dry skin.
- Follow with a moisturizer. For sensitive skin, use the "sandwich": cream, then retinol, then another layer of cream.
- Always wear sunscreen in the morning: retinoids make skin more sensitive to the sun.
What is normal and what is not
In the first weeks, mild dryness, tightness and slight flaking are possible as the skin adjusts. If you get strong redness, burning or irritation, take a break, then return to the product less often or choose a gentler form.
What not to combine on the same night
- AHA/BHA acids and scrubs — alternate them with retinol on different nights.
- Other retinoid products — one is enough in a routine.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using retinoids.
