Hyaluronic acid is one of the most popular hydrating ingredients, so it can be puzzling when skin still feels tight and flaky after a serum. Usually the ingredient itself is not the problem: what matters is how you apply it and what else is in your routine. Here are the most common reasons and how to adjust.
What hyaluronic acid does and does not do
Hyaluronic acid is a humectant: it attracts water and helps hold it in the upper layers of the skin. That makes it good at adding hydration, but it does not cover everything comfortable skin needs.
- Water — humectants such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin and betaine help here.
- Lipids — ceramides, squalane and plant oils soften the skin and help the barrier retain moisture.
- A protective layer — a cream on top slows down the loss of water from the skin.
It also helps to separate two similar-sounding states. Dehydrated skin lacks water and often feels tight, even if it looks shiny. Dry skin lacks lipids and tends to look rough or flaky. Skin can be both at once, and hyaluronic acid alone mainly addresses the first.
Why skin can still feel dry
- You apply it to completely dry skin. A humectant needs water to hold. On damp skin it has more to work with.
- There is no cream on top. Without a sealing layer, the water can evaporate quickly, and skin may feel tight again soon after the serum dries.
- The air is very dry. Frost outside and heating indoors both mean low humidity, so skin loses water faster and a light serum may not be enough on its own.
- Your skin barrier is under stress. Harsh cleansers, hot water and frequent scrubs or exfoliating acids can make it harder for skin to retain moisture.
- Your skin needs lipids, not more water. If flaking and roughness are the main concern, adding another hydrating layer may change little, while a cream with ceramides can feel much more comfortable.
How to use hyaluronic acid so it feels comfortable
- Cleanse gently with lukewarm water. Skin should not feel tight afterwards.
- Apply a hydrating toner, or leave the skin slightly damp.
- Press in a few drops of hyaluronic acid serum. A thin, even layer is enough.
- Follow right away with a cream, while the skin is still a little moist.
- In the morning, finish with sunscreen.
Choose the texture of your cream by how your skin feels: a milky lotion suits skin that gets tight only slightly, while a richer barrier cream suits skin that flakes. One to two times a week, a hydrating mask can add extra comfort.
Signs your routine needs a change
- Tightness right after washing — look at your cleanser first; it may be too strong for your skin.
- Tightness a few hours after your routine — try a thicker cream or a second thin layer.
- Flaking and rough patches — reduce scrubs and exfoliating acids for a while and add a cream with ceramides.
- A sticky feeling — you may be using too much serum; use less and let it settle before the cream.
If you notice lasting redness, burning or irritation, stop using the new product and talk to a dermatologist. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding and unsure about any product in your routine, talk to your doctor.
